  • We are very sad to report that, John Ritchie, Preston North End's tough tackling full back from the 1967-1972 period, passed away in hospital on Thursday 16th February 2012.

  • Preston North End Former Player Peter Sayer

John, aged 67, was born in Ashington and played his early football with Whitley Bay. He was an England Amateur international prior to joining the professional ranks with Port Vale in 1965. After 50 league games for the 'Valiants' John was transferred to Preston North End for a total of 17,500, in April 1967. He played in the final two games of that season prior to establishing himself in the team as the regular left full-back, playing alongside George Ross.

  • Despite suffering a couple of long term injuries John still managed to represent the 'Lilywhites' on 107 occasions. He was sold to Bradford City in 1972, along with Gerry Ingram, for a 15,000 transfer fee. After a short stint with the Yorkshire team he joined non-league Stafford Rangers, and when he left the game he loved John found employment in the Prison Service.

  • His untimely death came as shocking news and the Preston North End Former Players' Association sends their sincere condolences to his wife, Liz, his family and many friends. RIP John.
